Died in a Blogging Accident

I keep a Google Trends Gadget on my iGoogle search page to check out what the world cares about. Todays Top ten had me laughing.

First off, far too many people are watching "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" Not only that, they are cheating while playing at home. If you have to use Google then you aren't.

Second, I was intrigued by todays #6 entry. Searching on it didn't explain much until I came across this at xkcd.com.

Nicely done, not only is it funny (as always with xkcd) , it also skewed Google's trend tracker. XKCD is one of my favorites and it's worth anyones time who enjoys geek humor. If you've never seen it before, be prepared to waste the next hour or so of your life.

update 8:20am: There are now 1440 results from google making it the # 1 most dangerous on the list. I'm glad my warped sense of humor is shared.

update 24 hrs later: Over 7,ooo results. I should really think about getting out of such a dangerous business.

Update 8:15pm Just for Ken.: 11,600 Results

+1. Copied your post to my LJ :)
I wonder how much people died in a googling accident in process.

google currently returns 3000 results for "died in a blogging accident". soon to be more, in part because of this current comment he he

died in a blogging accident

d8

incidentally, "died in a knitting accident has gone up quite a bit for some strange reason

According to Gawker, this guy died from blogging, and the Gawker poster might be next to go. It's not exactly "died in a blogging accident" but it's pretty close...

And they posted it a few days before the XKCD strip, so maybe that was part of his inspiration?

As of right now, "died of a blogging accident" still returns exactly 1 result.

As of now 8100, though 5 minutes ago I counted 8110. It peaked already, but a post on Slashdot might change it again...

Currently 277,000 pages, and your blog is first :)

What I'd like to know is which websites were the original 2 results.

Anonymous said...

The original 2 posts were about death by blogging, but didn't list anyone having died.

MySpace deaths can probably be considered death by blogging.

There's also a list of possible ways to die via blogging accident here.

Anonymous said...

I'm also fan of XKCD... and now its 45,500!!!

Anonymous said...

The sad thing is that now it is almost impossible for anyone to know what the two original hits were when Randall did the search...

Ed said...

Still going strong. As of now, 49200 hits, which makes bloging some 50 times more dangerous than skiing.

Roberto B. said...

274000 hits. Brace yourselves, she's gonna blow!

287,000. That's insane, I'm never going to blog again. However, I haven't seen too many results when searching for "velociraptor invasion prevention tactics". Russel, take note. Someone has been neglecting their self-defense methods.

Its only 3910 site.
dont forget the "" dumbass

You did give me some ideas though - searched for:

"died in a googlewhack accident": 0 hits

"died in a googlewhacking accident": 0 hits

so they're not even googlewhacks. I shall have to create a page so it will get that holy-of-holy single hit.

"died in a blagging accident": TWO HITS! w00t.
and with any luck, the page is old enough now that it's unlikely to go up

hehehe :)

aw, crap, I should have leetspeeked those --- now the count will be 1, 1 and 3 once a spiderbot picks up on them. can a mod de-spider-food them for me quick smart? :D
